When you walk into the movie theater (do people still do that?) to watch a film you’ve been waiting patiently for, you don’t want any spoilers.
That’s how I felt when I heard the selfless story of Shane Cleveland, who donated one of his kidneys to Nate Robinson, the former Washington and NBA standout who was also a star at Rainier Beach.
When word started to spread, I read Christian Caple’s excellent story, but I hoped to, one day, sit down with Cleveland and hear him tell the story from start to finish.
So, I was thrilled when he agreed to join me as a guest on Spilled Ink. With the release of Robinson’s new shoe collab with EQLZ – the box has the photo of Cleveland and Robinson from the hospital – it seems like the right time to drop the episode.
The episode is both emotional and inspiring. The story is more than a medical miracle, it’s a testament to community, faith, and quiet courage. Cleveland shares how a chance moment at a Husky spring football game led him to say yes to something life-altering.
He opens up about how his wife’s earlier kidney donation made his decision and easy one, how their family lives by a quiet example of service, and what it felt like to be chosen among thousands of potential donors. From chance encounters to life-long bonds, Cleveland’s story reminds us all that the biggest moments often come when we simply say yes to helping someone else.
Whether you’re a sports fan, a believer in human goodness, or just someone who needs to hear something hopeful – this episode delivers.
