Alvin Snow Finds Purpose at Kennedy Catholic High School
The former Franklin and EWU star embraces a calling he couldn’t ignore.
BURIEN, WA – For Alvin Snow, coaching wasn’t part of the plan.
Despite numerous offers over the years to coach in college, the former Franklin High School and Eastern Washington University star always found reasons to choose a different path.
“I’ve always found my own personal reasons,” Snow said.
Now, as the head coach at Kennedy Catholic High School, Snow is “living the dream right now.”
So, why did Snow decide this was the right time to accept a job he hadn’t even applied for?
“I realized I’m just not listening,” he said. “God is telling me something, and I’m ignoring what He’s telling me. Here, I feel like I have to be obedient. When this opportunity came about, I just had to be obedient.
“That’s all this is. I’m just listening and doing what He’s telling me to do.”
When Kennedy Catholic was looking to fill its basketball coaching vacancy, Snow, who is in both the Hall of Fame at both Eastern Washington and Franklin, was initially helping the program with the hiring process. One day, while on the phone with a friend discussing the position, he jokingly floated himself as a candidate.

Suddenly, that friend added Kennedy Catholic athletic director Ryan Mummert to the call. Snow was put on the spot, and within an hour, Mummert was sitting in Snow’s home office.
“Now we’re at my house, in my office, and we had to have a real conversation,” Snow said.
What began as a lighthearted suggestion turned serious quickly. As Snow weighed the opportunity, he sought advice from his wife.
“I asked my wife, ‘Babe, do you think I should do this?’” Snow said. “She shocked me completely. She said, ‘Babe, you should.’”
That response threw Snow “for a loop.” He returned “back into prayer” and ultimately decided to take the position.
Now, more than halfway through his first season, Snow and the Lancers are building momentum game by game.
“It’s been tons of fun,” Snow said. “The kids have been wildly receptive to me, and I wasn’t sure because I’m not the easiest guy. I’m demanding. I’m principled. I’m a stickler for details. I can be hard on kids, but these guys have been very receptive to everything I’ve demanded of them.”
After starting the season 1-4, the Lancers have won nine of their last 11 games. Most recently, Kennedy handed Auburn its first loss to an in-state team this season.
“It’s not been easy, but they’ve been all about it, and we’re seeing the difference, the results,” Snow said. “I’m just proud to be here. I’m excited, and I don’t plan on going anywhere.”
